The Journey Within the Journey

Many years ago I was introduced to a concept by the late Dr Ian Player that has stayed with me ever since.

Ian spoke about the idea that whenever we travel through nature, we are undertaking two journeys at the same time, an outer journey and an inner journey.

The benefits of both have been clear to me ever since. The Outer Journey gives us memories, and the Inner Journey changes us.

Over the last decades of taking my adventure groups to Africa I've seen this play out consistantly. Not only in myself, but in the many of the hundreds of people who travelled with me.

The outer journey is what most people expect. It's the wildlife sightings, the landscapes, the conservation projects, the people we meet, and the adventure of exploring wild places. It's the excitement of seeing elephants at close range, watching a leopard disappear into the bush, or waking up to the sounds of Africa around camp.

Alongside that, something else happens as the days pass and people settle into the rhythm of the journey and begin to slow down. The distractions of everyday life start to fade and the conversations become deeper.

One of my favourite parts of any journey is sitting around the campfire in the evenings. There is something about being around a fire, sharing quiet conversations and reflecting on the day in this safe space where people to open up.

At first, people often talk about what they saw, then they start talking about how they felt about what they saw. A wildlife encounter becomes more than a sighting as we start to talk about purpose and responsibility. A conversation with a local guide challenges assumptions and people begin to reflect on their own lives, their priorities, and what really matters to them.

I've watched complete strangers arrive on a trip and leave as lifelong friends because they shared not just an adventure, but a journey of personal discovery and challenges they have come through together.

I've seen young people grow in confidence and adults reconnect with parts of themselves that had been buried beneath the pressures of everyday life.

This is the inner journey, which is quieter than the outer journey, but equally if not more powerful.

And after more than twenty years of travelling through Africa, I've come to believe that while people may join our adventures for the wildlife, landscapes, and experiences, it is often the conversations around the campfire, the reflections shared with fellow travellers, and the personal growth that stay with them the longest.

And tonight as I sit around the camp fire with this group, I can see and hear the very same thing happening again, as it always will.

The outer journey gives us memories. The inner journey changes us...

Angus
